We have just heard that a documentary concerning the Atlantic Yards Project (we have discussed AY numerous times on this blog, including here and here) will be previewing at the ALI-ABA Eminent Domain and Land Valuation Litigation course next week in Coral Gables, FL. If you have not registered, there is still time and here's another reason why this course is so unique.

Battle of Brooklyn chronicles the seven year fight to stop the use of eminent domain in the single densest development proposed in U.S. history, the infamous Atlantic Yards Project.

Battle of Brooklyn is a compelling human story set against the backdrop of an important social issue. Don’t miss the chance to see and discuss it with your friends and colleagues at our conference.
-Leslie Fields, Esq.

Attorney for the property owners, Michael Rikon says: "The Battle of Brooklyn is a very important film because it graphically shows how disenfranchised property owners are when confronted with condemnation...This is the best narrative of eminent domain abuse ever made. It is a must for any one seriously interested in Urban Planning."

About BATTLE of BROOKLYN

The film is a close-range look at the fight to stop condemnation waged by property owners and residents living in the footprint of the Atlantic Yards Project, a massive real estate development proposal to build 16 skyscrapers and a basketball arena for the New Jersey Nets in the heart of Brooklyn.

Daniel Goldstein's apartment sits at what would be center court of the new arena. He is dragged into the fight because he simply can't believe that the government should use the power of Eminent Domain to take his property and hand it off to a private developer. He and others form a community activist group to develop alternative plans to the proposal and to expose misconceptions about the project in the media. Going up against the largest publicly traded real estate developer in the U.S., a mayor, and Russian oligarch (all billionaires), he wages an all out battle to stop the project and takes his case to the State's highest court of law.

Along the way, Daniel falls in love, gets married and starts a family. Compiled from almost 500 hours of footage, Battle of Brooklyn is an epic tale of how far people will go to fight for what they believe in.

I hope everyone takes the time to see this documentary. I had no idea it was being filmed over a 7 year period until I was asked for an interview. I had the privelege of representing Daniel Goldstein. My firm represents most of the condemnees in the proceeding. The Atlantic Yards project is an incredible example of eminent domain abuse.Michael Rikon

As a participant from the beginning of the Atlantic Yards fight, I am moved and staggered by what Galinsky and Hawley have achieved with "Battle of Brooklyn." They've captured seven years of complex political and legal realities in a clear and straightforward storyline, while also crafting a deeply moving portrait of what it takes to fight Goliath.
